Process

Framing

At the beginning of a piece of work it is important for us to understand just how an issue is being seen,
how it has come about and what is desired. At the same time we are keen to be understood in terms of the balance of responsibilities and what we can do and what we cannot. This contracting conversation
takes place against a moving backdrop and so we proactively raise it throughout the life of a piece of
work.

Action

Our interventions broadly consist of cyclical rounds of inquiry, sense making, advocacy and change.
These are carried out together with, rather than on, members of the client organisation. In this way
members are involved in improving their experience, so become responsible for it. At the same time they
become skilled in observing and intervening thus building capability for the future.

Inquiry

Inquiry into whatís happening can take many forms and reveals a rich and complex picture of the
organisation. Often the 'filters' through which things are being seen become obvious as too do the
consequences of those filters.

Sense making

Having collected data through the process of inquiring we pause to
jointly make sense of what has been found, noticing the different
interpretations and theories employed. The process of sense making
naturally leads to a choice for possible further actions.

Advocacy

At points throughout this process we will advocate the potentia
consequences and alternative choices available to clients. We will
provide specific skills development as required by the process to
build capability and reduce the potential for dependency.

Change

Once a course of action is chosen we support clients in intervening in the patterns that have been
found. Often this involves simply doing familiar things in unfamiliar ways or introducing new behaviours
to the clients repertoire. What ever the intervention, the sub-process of inquiry is enacted to monitor
results and continue the development process.

Reframing

At points throughout the engagement we will actively check our understanding and that of our client.
We expect this to move and flex rather than to stay rigid. This reframing is the mechanism by which we
jointly maintain, change or complete our engagement.
